If Dad were conducting this memorial service, you can bet that the first thing would be John 14:
Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.
Throughout life, Dad lived by these words, every day in expectation of the Glory of God. This was something he taught me early on in my life. There is no need to be afraid of death - so long as you remain ready. Dad, always ready to quote scripture, would tell us, "Matthew 24:44 Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh."
My memory of Dad is that he was always busy: either working, or attending church meetings, or tinkering on the next project in the workshop. Whether he was behind his desk making a deal, or leading the praise and worship, or silently in prayer at the weekly pray meeting, or sawing a piece of wood, we all know it was all done selflessly; always for the benefit of others.
Dad's consistency, his Godliness, his generosity, his cheerful smiling, his singing, and his wisdom have made a lasting mark on my life - and I would think a positive impression for many others too.
I have so many fond memories of Dad that I have found it difficult to pick out any one to share here. The times we spent fishing on Durban harbour? The times we were travelling to Hong Kong or USA? The driving lessons? The fun and silly magic tricks?
Perhaps the most endearing memory I have is of Sunday afternoons. After lunch, I had to be quiet and play outside, while Dad took a nap on the couch – his moment of quiet.
At the end of John 14, Jesus continued to say:
Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. The world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do.
